The White-Necked Raven is a smaller, broader-billed relative of the Common Raven. As its name suggests, it bears a distinct white neck marking, giving the appearance of wearing a white collar adorning a cloak of black. Ravens are among the most intelligent of birds, with the ability to remember, learn, and repeat a vast variety of sounds, including human speech.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg, like the Raven, bore remarkable wisdom. This crocheted collar design is inspired by her dissent collars, which she wore proudly atop her robes when her opinion was at odds with the majority – a brilliant visual way for her voice to be heard when it was verbally drowned out. She hoped that this seemingly small gesture would inspire change over the course of time, describing that it is the dissenter’s hope “that they are writing not for today, but for tomorrow.”
Sizing: pattern is written for a one size collar that will fit most adults. Customization instructions are included to adjust to any other size (based on any measurement desired).
You will need:
Approx. 50 yd/46 m of dk weight yarn
Size G/4mm crochet hook
Scissors
Tapestry needle
One button - around ½” diameter
Sample yarn:
Sprigs and Stone Springy DK in Ebb
(one 20g mini skein)
Stitches/terms used:
Chain (ch)
Slip stitch (sl st)
Foundation single crochet (fsc)
Single crochet (sc)
Picot single crochet (psc):
As if working a sc, insert hook into st, yarn over and pull up a loop. *Yarn over and pull through one loop. Repeat from * 2 more times (you will now basically have created a ch 3). Yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook. Psc complete.

Gauge: Foundation sc row: 80 sts = 19 in/48 cm. No further gauge needed, as pattern consists of decorative lace that can vary in width and length can be customized.
